Mannaz Rune: meaning and message

Mannaz is the twentieth rune of the Elder Futhark and one of the most profound of the third aett: it is the rune of the human being. It speaks of you as an individual —your identity, your intelligence, your way of being in the world— and, at the same time, of you as part of something larger: family, community, humanity. No one truly knows themselves in solitude; we see ourselves reflected in others, and that mirror is the heart of Mannaz.

Its name comes from Proto-Germanic mannaz, "man" in the sense of "person." The glyph seems to show two Wunjo figures interlaced, two beings holding each other up: a perfect image of cooperation. In the old rune poems, man is described as "joy to man," reminding us that we are, to one another, the greatest gift and the greatest challenge.
