Viking Runes — 3 cards

The runes have been whispering answers for more than a thousand years to those who know how to ask. With this free Viking rune reading you draw three runes of the Elder Futhark and receive a clear reading about the origin of your situation, the point where you stand, and the direction opening up before you. You need no prior experience: think of your question, draw your runes, and let them speak.

What the Viking runes are

The runes are the signs of the Elder Futhark, the alphabet used by the Germanic and Scandinavian peoples between the 2nd and 8th centuries. There are 24 symbols, and each one has its own name, sound, and meaning: Fehu speaks of abundance, Uruz of primal strength, Algiz of protection. For the peoples of the north they were far more than letters: they were carved into wood, bone, or stone as sacred signs. Tradition tells that the god Odin hung for nine nights from the tree Yggdrasil, wounded by his own spear, to win the secret of the runes and hand it to humankind.

If you want to know each symbol in depth, our index of Viking rune meanings has all 24 runes explained one by one.

How the runes are consulted

Traditionally the runes are kept in a cloth bag and drawn at random, or cast onto a cloth to read the ones that land face up. In this online version we keep the essence of the ritual: ask an open question ("what do I need to know about my work", "what energy surrounds this relationship"), breathe deeply, and choose three runes. The runes do not answer with a flat yes or no: they show you forces in motion so that you can decide with greater clarity.

What each position reveals

  • The root: the origin of what you are living through, the deep cause you may not be seeing. The key to everything else is often here.
  • Your moment: the energy surrounding you right now, your resources and your blocks in the present.
  • The path: where the situation is heading if you carry on as you are. It is not a sentence but an orientation: you can always change course.

Reversed runes

When a rune appears reversed (upside down), its energy does not disappear: it shows up blocked, delayed, or turned inward. A reversed Fehu, for example, may warn of losses or of an effort that has yet to bear fruit. Not all runes can be reversed: some, like Gebo or Isa, are symmetrical and always read the same. Take reversed runes as a gentle warning, never as a bad omen.

Frequently asked questions
