Uruz Rune: meaning and message

Uruz (ᚢ) is the second rune of the Elder Futhark and embodies primal, untamed strength. If Fehu was the domestic wealth of cattle, Uruz is its wild reverse: the raw power of nature that cannot be owned, only faced. It is the rune of vitality, health, and the courage proven in the trial.

Its name comes from the Proto-Germanic *ūruz, the aurochs: an enormous wild ox that roamed the forests of Europe and that young warriors had to hunt as a rite of passage. To face the aurochs was to face your own fear; that is why Uruz speaks both of physical strength and of the transformation that comes from overcoming a challenge.
