Fehu Rune: meaning and message

Fehu (ᚠ) is the first rune of the Elder Futhark and opens the first aett, that of Freyja. It represents wealth in motion: not treasure locked away under key, but resources that circulate, are invested, and bear fruit. For the Germanic peoples, that wealth was cattle, the most tangible measure of prosperity that existed then.

Its name comes from the Proto-Germanic *fehu, which literally means "cattle" and, by extension, "goods" or "money" (from that same root comes the English fee). That the runic alphabet begins with abundance says a lot: every path needs resources and energy to get going, and Fehu is precisely that initial spark.

Meaning of Fehu

Reversed Fehu warns of losses, unexpected expenses, or a sense of scarcity that can be both financial and emotional. It usually points to poorly managed resources or low self-esteem that makes you settle for less than you deserve. It is not a condemnation: it is a call to review what you are spending your money and your energy on.
