Sowilo Rune: meaning and message

Sowilo is the rune of the sun, the sixteenth of the Elder Futhark and the one that closes its second aett with a burst of light. After the hail, the need and the ice that open this series of runes, Sowilo arrives as the natural resolution: the sun breaking through the clouds, energy returning, victory after the crossing. It is, together with Fehu and Wunjo, one of the most luminous and sought-after runes in the whole ancient runic alphabet.

Its name comes from Proto-Germanic *sōwilō, "sun." In the Nordic latitudes, where winter devours the light for months, the sun was no ornament of the sky: it was life itself.
