Perthro Rune: meaning and message

Perthro is the rune of mystery and fate, the fourteenth of the Elder Futhark and the most enigmatic of all: not even the specialists agree on exactly what its name means. The most accepted interpretation identifies it with the dice cup or the vessel for casting lots: the container from which fall the destinies no one can predict.

Its name likely derives from Proto-Germanic *perþō, of uncertain sense —and that uncertainty is, in itself, part of its teaching. The Germanic peoples, as Tacitus recounts, were great enthusiasts of casting lots and reading omens: they knew there is a part of life that cannot be governed, only played. Perthro is the rune of that part: chance, the hidden, the wyrd or woven fate not yet revealed.
